4 college credits for high school juniors and seniors
Summer camp is a fun way to practice Chinese and
experience studying abroad! Spend five weeks immersing
yourself in Chinese language and culture in Taiyuan, one of
China's oldest cities, established in 500B.C.
On the weekends visit such sites as the Great Wall, Xi'an's
Terracotta Warriors, a rural village and much more. You will
have the opportunity to participate in Wushu, calligraphy and
other elective classes during the week. The program includes
placement with Chinese families that will help you practice
Chinese, introduce you to home-made Chinese cooking and
make the way for lifelong friendships.

This upcoming summer of 2009, the University of Wisconsin
System has paired up with Mercan to offer high school students
FOUR transferrable college credits for participating in the
Summer Camp.

Immerse yourself in the culture and language of China in this
five-week program open to Mandarin language learners of all
levels, including beginners. This University of Wisconsin
Colleges program is designed to give high school students like
you a stimulating and exciting college study abroad experience.
It is the most affordable, high-quality program available in the
U.S.
and you get to earn four college credits!
Based in the historic city of Taiyuan, China's ancient former
capital, you will live with a Chinese family and be placed in
morning classes appropriate to your level. You will also have an
opportunity to participate in cultural workshops such as Wushu,
Chinese watercolor painting and other activities in the
afternoons. Weekends will offer excursions to areas of interest,
including a remote mountain village. The program also includes
touring to Beijing and Xian.

July 7-August 9, 2009
Estimated Cost: $2,949
(Comprehensive fee includes tuition, meals, home stays, all
travel and accommodations within China and insurance)
International Airfare: Approximately $1,500

About the Facilitator
Tim Urbonya worked as an educator at both the high school and collegiate level in China for more than 12 years.
Tim is Director of Continuing Education and Study Abroad for UW Colleges.
High school students participating in the program must:
- Be at least high school juniors or seniors by fall 2009
- Be at least 16 years of age at the time of travel
- Obtain at least two letters of endorsement from a counselor, instructor or principal
An orientation will be scheduled in April 2009.
The program is provided in partnership with the Mercan
Chinese Language Institute (www.mercanschool.org), a
Wauwatosa, Wisconsin-based organization that enrolls more
than 6,000 students in language training facilities both in Milwaukee and Taiyuan (www.mercanschool.com).
